When people get in touch

Renovating an older place

Before you open up walls, ceilings, a bathroom or flooring in a pre-1990 home, it helps to know what’s in there. We inspect and, where needed, sample the materials the work will disturb.

You’ve found something you’re not sure about

Plenty of building materials look like asbestos cement, and plenty of asbestos looks harmless. If it can’t be told apart by sight, a sample settles it in the lab.

Workplace paperwork

Asbestos registers and condition assessments for buildings where people work — the documentation owners and managers are required to keep.

Damaged or unwanted asbestos

Make-safe work when something has been broken or disturbed, and licensed removal of non-friable asbestos materials.

What happens during an asbestos inspection

An inspection starts with the areas you’re worried about, then extends to other materials nearby that the planned work might disturb. If something can’t be identified with confidence on site, a small sample can go to the laboratory. Findings come back to you in writing, with recommendations on what to do next.

  1. Talk through the property and the work you’re planning
  2. Inspect the accessible areas
  3. Take samples where a material can’t be identified by sight
  4. Send samples to a laboratory for analysis
  5. Provide written results and recommended next steps
A few practical notes. Similar-looking materials in different rooms may each need their own sample — one result doesn’t always cover the whole house. Taking a sample usually leaves a small sealed patch and a bit of noise. Standard laboratory results are back in about 7 days, with a faster turnaround (around 3 days) available for an extra cost.
